Lieberman: Obama Couldn’t Go To Iraq If It Wasn’t For McCain

Since the Republicans have framed the Iraq debate in terms of the level of violence, the only way we can “win” is to stay in Iraq and keep fighting. If we withdraw at any point in time, even 100 years from now, the insurgents win and we lose. Iran will have more influence than us and we will not have control of their oil.

The insurgents in the country are fighting for two things: political power and to make the US leave. No matter how large our surge is, they will still want those two things, so we have placed ourselves into a situation where there is no winning or losing. We have no enemies there. We just want to keep our influence on their political system and oil supplies.

The surge may help reduce violence, but will never make Iraq have WMD, will never expose any Iraq-Al Qaeda ties, will never bring back our 5,000 troops, will never bring back our $1 trillion, will never revive the 1 million dead Iraqis, will never reduce our debt, will never strengthen our dollar, will never rebuild our moral standing in the world and will never convince me that this war was a good idea.
